Counseling introduction
- Students meet their counselor for the first time
- Get an understanding of how counselors help students in the school
- Learn how to schedule 1-1 appointments with their counselor
Teacher Panel
- Students get to ask teachers questions on how to be successful as they transition into the high school.
Grade 9 Lesson 1 Comfort Zones
- Students are introduced to 'comfort zone', 'learning zone' and 'danger zone' concepts and how it applies to their academic and daily lives
- Students are required to book a 1-1 meeting with their counselor.
Grade 9 Lesson 2 Maia Learning & Personality/Career Profile
- Students get a brief understanding of the counseling process at KIS from grade 9 through to graduation
- Students are introduced to Maia learning for the first time
- Students complete a personality profiler that matches them to potential career paths.
- Students learn about jobs they might consider in the future. Looking at salary, education requirements and job description
Grade 9 Lesson 3 Empathy & 4-Year Plan
- Students explore what empathy is and learn skills on how to be more empathic to each other
- Complete an empathy activity in small groups
- Introduced to the KIS 4-year plan
- Get an deeper understanding of graduation requirements
- Learn about the AP courses they can take
- Understand when is the best time to start taking standardized tests
Grade 9 Lesson 4 Course Registration
- Students begin the process of registering for their grade 10 courses
- Learn about how KIS graduation requirements compliment university entrance requirements
- Explore factors they should considered when choosing elective and AP courses
- Learn about any new courses being offered in the up-coming academic year
- Get an understanding of the different subject area focused Pathways they can take
Grade Mental Health & Suicide Prevention
- Students learn the importance of sharing concerns with a trusted adult
- Students learn some basic skills in helping someone who is experiencing high levels of distress
- Students build upon their understanding of mental health issues
Self Awareness, Emotions and Redirecting Thoughts
- Students learn the importance of recognizing and identifying the emotions they feel
- To learn about the relationship between thoughts, feelings and actions
- Students practice recognizing their automatic thoughts that can often be unrealistically negative and then learn the process of reframing those thoughts to have more balance
