Counseling Introduction
- Students meet their counselor for the first time
- Get an understanding of how counselors help students in the school
- Learn how to schedule 1-1 appointments with their counselor
Perfectionism & Conditions of Worth
- Students learn about the negatives of striving to be perfect
- Students become increasingly self-aware by understanding conditions of worth
Mock Admissions
- Students experience the college admissions process from the perspective of an admissions committee
- Students get a better understanding of what college admissions look for in student applications
- Students evaluate 3 real student applications to decide who they would either admit, deny or waitlist
Grade 11 Course Registration
- Students begin the process of registering for their grade 12 courses
- Learn about how KIS graduation requirements compliment university entrance requirements
- Explore factors they should considered when choosing elective and AP courses
- Learn about any new courses being offered in the up-coming academic year
Match Factors
- Student begin understanding the importance of college fit and the relevance it has for their future as well as application success
- Students learn about what the different factors and identify the one most important to them
- Student get a much better understanding of other aspects of college that they need to consider along side academics
Researching Universities & An Introduction to College Applications
- Students learn about different methods of finding colleges that meet their match factors
- Students continue to think on their priorities when choosing a university
- Students learn how to navigate Maia Learning and how it will be used to support their college process
- Students learn how they can categorize a school as a 'likely' 'target' or 'reach' school
- Students begin building their considering college list on Maia Learning
Different Types of College Application Systems
- Students learn about the different type of applications they are likely to complete (Common Application, University of California Application, UCAS etc)
- Students are taught how to access important documents needed for applications such as their transcripts
- We begin the Common Application process with student creating their account
- Students work through and complete the first few sections of the Common Application
- Students add their counselor as a recommender to their Common Application
Common Application Work Session
- Students continue to work through each section of the Common Application and can ask their counselor for support and guidance
- Students begin their activities list and are given clear guidance on how to best complete their activities list
College Essays
- Students learn about how to write a great college essay
- Useful resources are shared with students for them to access to help them write their college essays
- Students complete an exercise to help them think of ideas for their college essay topic
- Students learn about what they should avoid when writing a college essay
- Students learn about the two main college essay formats : Narrative VS Montage
- Students have the opportunity to review college essays written by other students
Supplementary College Essays
- Students receive guidance on how to write one of the more important supplementary essays. The 'Why Us' essay
- Students learn about what mistakes to avoid when writing the 'Why Us' essay
- Students learn how to adequately research a school to write a good essay
- Students get the opportunity to review other student' essays
- Students are given suggestion on how to best spend their summer
Alumni Panel
- Our students are given the opportunity to ask past KIS students who are currently studying at university questions on their experiences
- This is a great way to get advice on anything to do with college / young adult life
